Hello Watches! I’ve been debating the purchase of a watch winder and I thought it might be worth getting your opinion on a couple of things relating to it. Apologies for any info below that sounds like I have no clue of what I’m on about - I’m relatively new to the automatic watch world.

Is it worth it in the first place?:

I’m wondering whether it is worth having one at all, and if it is then to what extent is it worth it? Opinion on other forums and areas of the Internet seem to differ significantly and I’m in two minds. It seems to be more worth it if a person has a watch or watches that have more complications and features, as it takes longer to set again if the watch stops. Likewise, it would be more worth it if you have a busy schedule and don't have the time to set the time and complications on your watch again.

Does having a watch winder cause unnecessary wear and tear?:

This is a tough one. On the one hand, some opinions suggest the movement of watch keeps internals slick and accurate, whereas some opinions suggest an increase in wear and tear on parts. A major part of this seems to be related to lubrication, it seems. Of course, the primary way to ensure the watch isn’t damaged internally is to keep up with the recommended servicing pattern as specified by the manufacturer.

If one were to purchase a watch winder, does TPD (turns per day) matter?

Again, there seems to be different opinion on this. Different winders offer different features for this. As an example, Wolf watch winders can vary:

Wolf Cub 1.8 - 900 TPD each direction, up t0 1800 TPD
Wolf Heritage 2.1 - 900 TPD each direction, up to 1800 TPD
Wolf Windsor 2.5 - 900 TPD each direction, up to 1800 TPD
Wolf Roadster 2.7 - 300-1200 each direction (customisable), up to 2400 TPD
Wolf Viceroy 2.7 - 300-1200 each direction (customisable), up to 2400 TPD

Different watches have different TPD requirements. As an example, I own a Seiko Prospex diver 200m and that requires 650 TPD going anti-clockwise only (according to Wolf's database) Therefore, would a Heritage 2.1 (as an example from the above list) turn it too much and therefore cause issues? The cost different between these watch winders is quite significant (RRP is similar, but sale prices in the UK show a big difference).

Is a longer delayed start time required?

Different winders seem to have different options for this. A delayed start allows the power reserve to deplete to make sure the watch doesn’t get over wound, apparently.
